Senior Subsea Engineer
What does your role cover?
I get to work on a wide variety of projects for many different clients across the project lifecycle, from concept stage through to decommissioning. My main tasks typically include pipeline & riser design, field development studies for subsea tie-backs, and studies for decommissioning of subsea oil & gas infrastructure. I have managed to get involved in some interesting projects, including a study for the Oil & Gas Technology Centre (OGTC) looking at ways to halve the cost of subsea tie-backs through the use of new technology, and a change in thinking in terms of equipment re-use. This was a great opportunity for me to learn about the various new technologies at the cutting edge of the subsea oil & gas industry.
Best Xodus Moment?
It’s hard to pinpoint a single moment, but I think I would say gaining my Chartership with the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, after having my interview at Xodus along with two of my colleagues. This would not have been possible without the opportunities I have had to take on responsibility at Xodus, the varied experience I have gained on projects since working here, and my Xodus mentor.
This would probably have to be presenting at a ‘Dragon’s Den’ style event at the OGTC, where I presented a project proposal to industry leaders from major operators and service companies for field testing of subsea wireless communication devices. This was definitely out of my comfort zone in terms of presenting, as well as performing in a business development role in place of my typical technical role. Thankfully the ‘dragons’ agreed our proposal was worth investment and the project has kicked off recently.
My initial link to Xodus was through my brother, Ross, who works at Xodus as a software engineer. The social events are definitely one of the positives, as well as the wide range of projects I have been able to get involved in, and the opportunity to take on real responsibility at a relatively early stage of my career.
What are you looking forward to at Subsea Expo?
I’m looking forward to attending the ‘Smart Solutions – New Technologies’ conference session where my colleague Mostafa Tantawi will be presenting on global buckling of flexible pipelines, as well as catching up on all the latest technologies being developed by subsea companies.
