Name: Mike Taylor
Age: 52
Job title: Senior Structural Consultant
Wanted to be? Professional footballer or brain surgeon
What does your job involve? Many offshore platforms are near or beyond their original design life, and are thought to be at or near their original load limit. However clients want to be able to develop new fields and tie them back to existing platforms at minimal cost. Therefore, one of the most important parts of my job is to check existing structures to see if they can take the loads applied by new developments. This means working with the very latest non-linear analysis techniques, which gets rid of the conservatisms inherent in the original designs. I also work on the design of new structures, and installation and removal of equipment.
Why is Xodus taking on more structural engineers? To increase our capability to analyse existing offshore structures and also to compete for work in the renewable energy sector. We will try to stay ahead of the demands from clients and right now we believe there is a demand for this service.
What’s the benefit for the company and clients? Xodus was started as a process engineering and subsea consultancy and we believe a lot of clients still think of us in that way. However, our aim is to provide a truly multi-discipline consultancy, so that we can provide answers to all of our clients’ problems, not just some of them.
Highlights? Working with so many very talented and really nice people – I know this sounds a bit clichéd, but it’s true. There is a great buzz about Xodus, with everyone really committed to making it successful. I feel valued as an individual, whereas in previous companies I have felt like a small cog in a very large wheel.
Worst bits? Going to Paris on business on Valentine’s Day without my wife, Liz.
Hobbies and interests? Liz has just about completed her teacher training so I have spent a lot of time with my children over the last two years. We have still managed a few concerts though, most recently Paulo Nutini, James Morrison and Lionel Ritchie. My son Cameron is football mad so we watch Aberdeen and occasionally go to see Man U. My daughter Kirsty plays piano, does cheerleading and goes to dancing classes. She recently danced at the Arts Centre and did brilliantly. I also enjoy playing golf and am currently learning to speak Italian. |
