Name: Andrew Myers
Age: 32
Job title: Principal/Lead Subsea Engineer
Wanted to be? A successful punk rock musician. Then I realised that was a contradiction in terms!
What does your job involve? Based in the London office I am part of the growing subsea team. My role is it to support the project/study manager, taking responsibility for the subsea scope. My work varies from conceptual field development studies, usually involving the identification and techno-economic evaluation of different development options, to more detailed pipeline and subsea design. I am currently working on the Selkirk Development Study for Nexen. Selkirk is an HP/HT single well tie-back located in the Central North Sea. Due to the HP/HT nature of Selkirk a non- standard pipeline design approach has been required. The pipeline wall thickness requirement for fully rated well shut in pressure WHSIP conditions is not technically or economically feasible. So the subsea facilities incorporate an OPPS / Cooler manifold. The OPPS / Cooler reduces the temperature prior to inlet to the pipeline and provides over pressure protection for the pipeline system to allow the application of no burst design criteria. This means that there won’t be loss of containment in the over pressure scenario, but the pipeline asset could be lost. Which is an interesting project basis.
Job highlights? Being involved from the beginning at a new office is a great opportunity and refreshing. I’ve been on a steep learning curve since joining Xodus in March and am enjoying working on challenging projects with a great bunch of people.
Worst bits? The repetitive story telling of my boss.
What’s been your greatest adventure? Going on tour in a band. Travelling around the country in the back of an old Transit van, playing gigs every night and meeting colourful people on the way. A really fulfilling experience. Or maybe that’s the rose tinted specs? |
