XPLORE – System Architecture

Features
XPLORE is independent of all control systems, plant historians and simulation packages because it uses industry-standard communication protocols. XPLORE is customisable, because no two plants are ever the same, and because it uses industry standards for communications, calculations and simulations, XPLORE can be tailored precisely to your needs. XPLORE is extensible. With its base framework and modular process units, XPLORE can be deployed on anything from a single CPU to an entire platform. XPLORE is role-based, so can display the same data in different ways to different users – plant metrics and KPIs for your asset manager, versus a plant overview in field units for your operators. XPLORE is user-friendly. Once the framework is installed, all you need to access XPLORE over your corporate intranet is a web browser. No downloads, no plug-ins. And upgrades are simultaneous for all users.

Architecture
The XPLORE system architecture is comprised of four distinct layers:

The Data Layer, where data is collected in real time from your data historian and other sources using a variety of protocols. Primary data on plant processes is combined with secondary data from process simulations or production databases, then collected at the…

Integration Layer, where XPLORE Data Manager (XDM) prepares the data (using validation, limits, logic, events analysis etc.) and stores the filtered results in a SQL database from which it is passed to the…

Application Layer, where the data is processed by an internal calculation module (a library of standard and customised calculations) or by XPLORE Simulation Manager (XSM), which performs simulations using the appropriate industry-standard package (e.g. HYSYS®, OLGA®, PROPSER, GAP). The results are read back in near-real time and stored in the SQL database, which users consult through the…

Visualisation Layer, the XPLORE user interface, consisting of customised web pages. The results of these queries can include plant data, calculated data and/or simulation results, and they are displayed using a variety of state-of-the-art techniques, including graphics, tags, trends and plots.

Physically, the different layers can reside on various servers, depending on the complexity of the installation. Data and Integration layers are generally hosted on the same server, the Application layer may be hosted on one or more servers, while the Visualisation layer requires a web server.
