Nigel Underwood, Consultant Engineer – Flexibles & Risers, Subsea Division.

Xodus Group received international recognition for its work in integrated subsea design at an oil and gas engineering conference in Portugal in June.

After undergoing a rigorous peer-review process, a team from the Xodus Subsea Division in Perth presented the technical paper Integrated Subsea Design – An Informed and Practical Approach to an international audience of offshore engineering sector representatives at the 27th International Conference on Offshore Mechanics and Arctic Engineering.

Nigel Underwood led the team that produced the technical paper, which included authors from the company’s Subsea and Oil & Gas Divisions.

He said the paper presented a practical approach to overcoming engineering hurdles and recommended an integrated approach to subsea design with the involvement of multi-disciplined teams. The current boom in the oil and gas sector is now impeding the efforts of companies trying to get projects into production on time and on budget. The unprecedented level of activity across the sector has resulted in considerable labour constraints and record hardware delivery delays.

Mr Underwood said the lead times for receiving subsea hardware have been at record levels, which made it even more important for engineering issues to be resolved as early as possible in the project lifecycle.

He said that lack of integration can be caused due to differing contracting strategies. These strategies can restrict information flow, increase project risk and potentially cause budget overruns.

The Xodus Subsea and Oil & Gas Divisions’ technical paper explored a unique approach to overcoming these hurdles, with a focus on integration and minimising risk exposure for operators in all aspects of subsea design. The paper also described the influences that other disciplines, such as flow assurance, facilities and subsurface, have on subsea design.
