Xodus AURORA helps to keep Orkney beautiful.

Twelve members of the Xodus AURORA team, along with partners, children and dogs all descended on Aikerness Beach, Evie in Orkney on a sunny April day to take part in this year’s Bag the Bruck – Orkney’s annual beach cleaning initiative.

Every spring Environmental Concern Orkney organises a mass voluntary clean-up of rubbish on over 50 sites in the Orkney Islands, mostly on the many beaches around the shores. The Orcadian word for rubbish is ‘Bruck’, hence the clean-up is known as ‘Bag the Bruck’.

Trawling the beach for more than three hours, the Xodus team discovered more than you’d expect, bagging bruck such as pipe lagging, a jacket, a tyre, a dolphin skeleton, chemical drums and what is thought to be a sink from a ship’s galley! And this was all in addition to the typical waste finds including polystyrene, plastic, rope, and net – all of which was bagged and recorded.

Thankfully, the typical Scottish weather did not prevail and it stayed dry for the event. Although, being a Sunday, it was somewhat of a motivational challenge for some of the younger members of the team to sacrifice their beds for the windy beach but most of them made it. And those who didn’t got lots of hassle on Monday. Not naming any names of course…

Thanks to all who volunteered, every little helps to keep Orkney beautiful.
