Case Study Tidal

Scope of service

Xodus was commissioned to provide environmental support to MeyGen Limited for submissions to regulatory authorities from 2012–2021, acting as project coordinator for the development of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the proposed deployment of subsea turbines in the Pentland Firth.

Key activities

Xodus delivered the EIA to support the Section 36 consent (2013) for MeyGen Phase 1, provided environmental support to discharge Condition 2b(ii) to enable deployment of an additional four turbines for Phase 1b, and undertook an options review to determine the most efficient consenting pathway for “MeyGen 2” following the project’s success in Contract for Difference Allocation Round 4. Xodus also prepared an EIA Screening Request for a consent variation to allow for MeyGen 2, which includes larger turbines (approximately 24‑metre diameter). Further support included the discharge of various consenting conditions.

This support encompassed feasibility studies for cable routing, consenting programme advice, secondment support, public consultation activities, preparation of addendums, Habitat Regulations Appraisals, and pre‑construction environmental support. Xodus also developed a novel ornithological survey design tailored to the project’s requirements.

Value created

Xodus provided MeyGen with comprehensive support throughout the Section 36 consenting process and beyond. Our work demonstrates extensive experience and technical capability in supporting tidal stream energy developments.
